Metallurgical coal is dark and hard. It is used for energy and heating by its carbon content and caking ability. It is harder and blacker and contains more carbon and less moisture and ash than low-rank coals. When converted to coke, a pure form of carbon, it is used in basic oxygen furnaces. The degree of coal and its caking ability is determined by the volatile matter, degree of metamorphism, mineral impurities and the ability of the coal to melt, swell and resolidify when heated.
Metallurgical coal trading market structure is predominantly oligopoly. Few players control a significant share of the market. IGR has access to metallurgical coal from Australia, USA and Russia. While China remains the largest producer of metallurgical coal, due to its own coke manufacturing requirement, it is difficult to get reliable sources who are able to commit and deliver. IGR manages the supply chain for metallurgical coal from port of loading to the discharge port.

Cost saving strategies for our customers
IGR is able to work with index price for metallurgical coal based on long-term contracts that cannot be terminated unless based on performance issues.
The team at IGR works with our principals on pricing strategies and forwards all savings that we derive from our own cost saving strategies. We understand that in the business of trading, our annual returns are based on thve frequency of trades done with our working capital set aside for trades, not by feeding into our principal’s margins.
